Jam King Jarvinen's Speech

for the 25th Anniversary

of the People's University

A

fter 25 years of services, overcoming many difficulties of People's University, a national holiday was organized in the city of "Kuopio" where Snellman lived.

Jarvinen, known as the "King of Jam" in the country, made a speech at the end of the ceremony that took more than an hour.

The guests listened to Jarvinen's speech with interest and attention, even though they were tired by listening to many speeches.

Jarvinen started his speech with the following words:

- I was once a poor and ordinary seller. As a child, I sold bagels in a basket. Then I opened a small shop in the bazaar and started selling candies. Great traders would trust me and give me candies, cookies and nuts as much as I wish. I would sell them and pay my debts day by day. So they would love me and encouraged me by promising that they would help me to open a larger store in the future.

At that time I did not have a problematic livelihood, I was living in clean clothes, in a good room. However, despite this, I did not like my state at that time. My soul was in pain. My own life and livelihood seemed narrow to me. Thinking with constant trouble, I said to myself, "The shop is small, the customers are limited, the profit is low. Will a whole life pass in such minorities?"

Jarvinen turned to the professors there and continued his words as follows.

- Gentlemen, listen to my story with patience!

You all well know that not every bagel seller child can become a king of jam, and every bagel seller child cannot give tens of thousands of marks for the construction of national theater in his home town. As Jarvinen does, he cannot provide the necessary assistance for the publication of a large newspaper to be established in the town where he was born.

I'm not saying these to praise myself. This is not a place where a person can praise himself. In your presence, in my person, there is the personality of the Finnish nation, which is young, strong and solid. I represent the Finnish nation here, who feeds on rye bread mixed with bark and works between forests and swamps by being patient. Among the Finnish nation, the king of jam is rare, but among this nation, Jarvinens like me are not absent.

Those with the name Jarvinen are a battalion. There are thousands of people like me. Jarvinens like me still root trees in the forest, roll stones from the mountains.

Many of them also have poor lives.

We are not afraid of difficulties and working, we do not envy others because they work harder. But this livelihood is narrow for those who are of the Jarvinen kind. It bothers them.

They desire a better life, they hope for a brighter future. They desire a brighter, more beautiful, stronger future like the sun. There is something that fuses in their soul and wants to squirt, but cannot find a way out.
